For years, Chem-Impex has faced significant operational and competitive hurdles stemming from its outdated digital infrastructure. The foundation of their business operations was an archaic Microsoft Great Plains Dynamics, which resisted integration with modern digital tools. Their existing eCommerce storefront, inherited from Hitachi Solutions, was severely limited in its functionality and acted as a drain on internal resources.
"We had the choice," recalls Jamie Shah. "We can upgrade our ERP system and spend two years doing that, or we can focus on our website and find a platform that we believe will serve us for the next 10+ years. We understood the value of doing the latter early on."
This legacy system created acute pain points:
- A Compliance Bottleneck: New, qualified buyers were forced into a cumbersome, multi-step process: they had to register, wait for manual internal review and approval, and only then could they place an order. This delay frustrated customers and created weekend crises for the internal team.
- Zero Digital Differentiation: In an industry characterized by a "sea of sameness," the old website was visually and functionally restrictive, preventing Chem-Impex from creating the engaging and accessible user experience it desired.
Hidden Costs and Customer Confusion: The platform struggled to dynamically calculate the complex fees associated with shipping hazardous materials. This resulted in frequent post-purchase shock when customers received accurate, but much higher, final shipping quotes.
